JAN TINBERGEN AWARDS: ISI COMPETITION FOR YOUNG STATISTICIANS

The International Statistical Institute (ISI) has announced a call for papers for the Competition for Young Statisticians in Developing Countries (Jan Tinbergen Awards). The authors of the prize winning papers will be eligible to present their work at the 57th Session of the ISI, to be held in Durban, South Africa (16-22 August, 2009).

Criteria for Admission:

Participating in the Competition is open to nationals of developing countries who are living in a developing country and who were born in 1977 or later. Applications are particularly welcome from women.

Contents of the Papers:

  • Papers may be submitted on any topic within the broad field of statistics.
  • Papers submitted must be unpublished, original works which may include material from participants' university theses.

Selection of Winning Papers:

  • An International Jury of distinguished statisticians will be appointed by the ISI. The Jury will examine all eligible submissions and select the three best papers. Their decision will be final.
  • Each author of a winning paper will receive the Jan Tinbergen Award in the amount of € 2,269 and be invited to present their papers personally at the Session, with all expenses paid (i.e. round trip airline ticket from her place of residence to Durban plus a lump sum payment to cover living expenses during the Session).
  • If a paper is submitted as a joint paper by two or more authors, only one of them can be offered the travel and other expenses for the Session. It is the authors' responsibility to nominate the author concerned. In the case of joint papers all authors must meet the requirements of eligibility.
  • Decisions on questions other than those concerning the substantive contents of the papers (which are subject to judgement by the Jury) shall be taken by the Executive Committee of the ISI, and their decisions shall be final.
